WASTE
When I started file trading , the preferred method was ftp file servers.
You'd set up a server share it with some friends . Things were pretty low key ,
and underground. Then came Napster, Gnutella and Kazza LITE. Life
was good , free music , free love *cough*. Inevitably the people that sell
music got a little pissed. They
announced they will prosecute file traders , to the sum of $150,000 per
shared song .LOL. It seems like things are coming full circle , and file traders
will be going underground again.
Setting up an FTP is still an option but it lacks the P2P (peer to peer)
"feel". Looking for an alternative , I found Waste. May 28,
2003 Nullsoft released version 1
Beta , soon after the parent company AOL , pulled the plug and removed
the file. Tooo late , it already on the web and was released under the
GPL. The same thing happened
with Gnutella when it first came out , and has since been improved .
Waste lets you set up a private network with trusted friends. It has chat
features , and lets you share files. It's encryption keeps unwanted guests from
sniffing your activity. The only thing limiting it's use is the amount of
trusted friends . It can also be a problem setting up , as it uses a fairly
secure encryption scheme.
Setting this puppy up
Get the file double click , agree to terms

I prefer to launch at start-up

pick a place to install

It'll ask you to move your mouse around to generate a random #

Choose a nickname , I like to use my AIM name so people know who I am. I left
the network name blank , but it's an option (duh) to name your network.

Run your key generator , and get your password. If your starting the network,
you'll need to copy your public key , and paste it into an e-mail . If your
joining an existing network you'll need to import a public key (copy and paste
from e-mail and or IM) to Public key text.

Pick a file that has has all your MP3's in it ; )

After you run it , go to view network status and enter one of your friends
who's installed the program IP address.

You should now have a list a friends that are connected to a network , that
your free to share files and chat with. I'm sure since this was
GPL'd we'll see an update
soon. I can't wait until somebody ports it to
GAIM. |
