My favorite filesharing program at this time is Kazaa . This program takes advantage of smart downloading , basically allowing you to download the same file concurrently from separate users , enabling faster downloads . I would stay away from the full Kazaa download and get Kazaa lite . It comes without some of the unneeded files associated with the regular install of Kazaa , which seem to be laden with spyware/advertisement ware . Even with the Lite version pop-ups still weasel their way in , a POP-up stopper will take of them . Kazaa lite isn't supported by Kazza , but is a hacked versions .It features as opposed to Kazaa - No Adware Do a search on google to find it ; ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Update --- this seems to be a bunk program , I started to review it , and was disapointed . The web-based installation was cumbersome , and required me to install digital rights management into Windows Media Player . I can only guess this is to keep me from making mp3 files . Control panel , uninstall programs , scour ...hopefully all the crapware that came with it . ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update --- cannot find server , guess it's dead . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hmm , this re-directs me to a web-graphics software site . Another dead horse . ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update --- The review below is about a year old , but still holds true . It'll be impossible to stop this network , and it's effective for broadband connections . Sadly :) I no longer have dial-up , and I've stayed away from bearshare in favor of XoloX . Gnutella based clients , are perhaps the future of person to person file sharing ( P2P ) . They differ from the above programs by using no centrally located server . Each person using the program contributes to server functions . The advantage to this would be ; Lawyers/RIAA would have to investigate every IP address and prosecute every user to shut it down ( not likely to happen ) . It's current drawbacks are slower downloads , searches and higher bandwidth demands . I personally use 2 shotgunned 56k connections and this simply isn't enough bandwidth for reliable downloads . The next architecture of Gnutella clients will try to solve this by lowering server functions of it's more pitiful modem users . Of the hundreds of these clients being developed and used , I've only tried 2 . The first being the original version, 0.56, which isn't being developed anymore . It's reverse engineered source code has many companies building off it .
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- old stuff------------------- Bearshare being the only one I've used so far . It's got a nice GUI and seems to work virtually bug free . I don't know if I'll get around to reviewing the other programs , cause this ones working like ex-lax with diarrhea ( smooth ) . 8--------------------------------------------------------------------------------D Update -------- Finally a solution to using napster , instructions for downloading and using it here . old stuff-------- Currently napster is supposed to be filtering copyrighted songs . Their are still many creative ways of getting these songs however . One would be to connect to a napigator server ( a server not owned by napster) . No doubt , someone will locate one offshore . Among the first to try bypassing the filtering is Aimsters' PIGENCODER . It rearranges your MP3 file names to circumvent the filters . Check out a napster search result HERE . A link to the first story I've heard of setting up a Napster server offshore . |
